In my 19-plus years as an independent career coach, during which I’ve interacted with thousands of college students and grads, I’ve reached a clear and firm conclusion: jobs and internships do not necessarily or always go to the most qualified candidates. They go to those who are good at getting hired and the ones who begin the search process early and doggedly persevere.

Career Days Theres a time and place to get stuff, and theres a time and place to get jobs thats what the career fair is for, Bond said. After attending last years Fall Career Days, Bailyn Bench will attend this years career fair with the hopes of landing an internship with Mondelez International, which produces products like Oreos and Triscuits. She said her strategy is to always start with the companies you want to talk to the least because as you go, you get more confident in talking to them so then you can save the best for last and know youre not as nervous. Bond also said students will benefit from talking to their top employer later in their career fair session so they can get more comfortable with the environment as the day progresses. Bench (sophomore-chemical engineering) said she spent around three hours at the career fair last year and felt overwhelmed by the crowds. She spoke with employers who gave advice regarding internships and resume building. Bench said she feels more prepared for next weeks career fair now that she knows what to expect, but she feels more pressure to do well at this career fair, because getting an internship or a job is growing in importance. Even if students dont receive offers from employers, Foster said students can still network for the future. Unlike past career fairs, this upcoming Fall Career Days offers some new resources. On Wednesday morning, first-year students are invited to a behind-the-scenes tour, so they can come network with employers and get some tips and tricks from them, Foster said. LinkedIn photographers [will also attend] so students can get a nice professional picture. For the second year, students can download the app Penn State Career Success, Communications and Programming Coordinator Jenna Kyger Lewis said. The app allows students to search and use wayfinding when theyre at the Bryce Jordan Center, so thats always a good tool to have, she said. Foster said the Career Services Center also has a professional closet providing attire for students who may not have access to the appropriate clothing.
